Early Symptoms of Macular Dystrophy

Macular dystrophy is a group of genetic eye disorders that affect the macula, part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. Early symptoms of macular dystrophy vary depending on the individual type. If you have this rare eye disease, visit H. Arnold Papernick, OD, in Mt Pleasant, PA. You'll need an eye exam and possible treatment.

Macular Dystrophy

Our eyes have a layer of tissue in the back called the retina. This tissue is light-sensitive and helps you see detail and color. The degeneration of the macula can damage your vision. Eventually, it can even cause blindness.

We can get the best treatment result if this condition is caught as early as possible. When this disease gets moderate to severe, it's harder to read, drive, or recognize people. Once diagnosed, you must see an eye doctor yearly to monitor it. Sometimes, treatments can slow the condition so it doesn't progress as far.

Early Symptoms

A common early symptom is a loss of central vision, which can cause objects to appear blurry or distorted. Straight lines may appear wavy or bent. Those with macular dystrophy may experience difficulty reading small print or recognizing familiar faces, particularly in well-lit conditions.

Some types of macular dystrophy can affect color perception, leading to a decreased ability to distinguish between colors or shades. Increased sensitivity to bright lights or glare may occur in the early stages of macular dystrophy.
