Understanding the Early Signs of Glaucoma

One of the leading causes of vision loss in the United States is glaucoma. Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages a person’s optic nerve, most often through increased intraocular pressure. Glaucoma is often referred to as a silent thief of sight, as it causes little to no early symptoms. That is why a routine eye exam with H. Arnold Papernick OD is imperative. Here are some signs that you could have glaucoma.

Vision Loss in a Single Eye

Sudden loss of vision or blind spots in your vision is a reason to get a glaucoma test. Remember, glaucoma develops gradually and causes only subtle symptoms as its onset. Without proper intervention, glaucoma can cause total blindness.

Increased Light Sensitivity

Sensitivity to light, especially bright lights at night, such as oncoming headlights, are a potential sign of glaucoma. If you notice light bothering your eyes more than it used to, schedule an eye exam as soon as possible.

Halos around Lights

Seeing halos around light sources can be caused by many different eye conditions, including glaucoma and cataracts. Halos can also make it more difficult to drive at night, often being the culprit for increased risk of an accident.

Vision Changes or Severe Pain

Sudden, intense eye pain is a sign of acute angle-closure glaucoma. If this happens to you, seek emergency care immediately.

Early detection of any age-related eye condition is imperative, not only for glaucoma. Only an optometry expert can accurately diagnose and treat many types of eye conditions. If your eyes "feel fine," that doesn’t guarantee that your eyes aren’t developing a serious condition like glaucoma.
