Risk Factors and Symptoms of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is often referred to as the "silent thief of sight" because, by the time symptoms are noticed, the vision loss experienced has usually become permanent already. Specifically, glaucoma refers to an eye disease where excessive pressure on the optic nerve results in vision loss. Anybody can develop glaucoma, but those over the age of 60 and those who have diabetes are statistically at a higher risk than others.

Symptoms of glaucoma can vary from one person to the next, as some will experience early symptoms and others will not know anything is wrong until they begin to lose their vision. Still, in those who do experience symptoms, the most common include:

  • sharp, unexplained eye pain
  • blurry vision
  • seeing halos around light

If you have any symptoms of glaucoma, it's important that you see an eye doctor as soon as possible for a screening.

Treatment Options for Glaucoma

If you do have glaucoma, the good news is that there are treatment options available to you. Generally, the best way to control glaucoma and prevent further vision loss is to prescribe a medication, such as a beta blocker, to control pressure in the eyes. However, in more serious cases, it may be necessary to have laser surgery in order to remove tissue and lower pressure levels in the eye and around the optic nerve.
