Lasik FAQs

Are you tired of wearing glasses or contacts to improve your vision? You could be a candidate for LASIK surgery. These FAQs from the office of H. Arnold Papernick O.D. in Mt. Pleasant offer greater insight into LASIK surgery and how it works to improve vision.

LASIK FAQ

What is LASIK surgery?

LASIK is a surgical procedure designed to correct myopia, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It involves the use of an excimer laser to gently reshape the cornea of your eye to improve your vision.

How do I know if LASIK surgery is right for me?

An evaluation by Dr. Papernick, our Mt. Pleasant optometrist, can determine if you’re a good candidate for LASIK surgery. In general, you must be at least 18 years old, have good eye health, have a stable prescription for at least one year, and have no major medical issues that may interfere with your healing.

Will I have 20/20 vision after LASIK surgery?

Although LASIK can greatly improve your vision, there’s no guarantee you’ll have 20/20 vision after your surgery. Most people, however, can perform daily tasks like driving, watching TV, and using a computer without glasses.

Is LASIK safe?

Advances in LASIK technology have made this a low-risk, effective procedure. Working with an experienced eye surgeon increases your chances of getting satisfactory results from your surgery.

Is LASIK painful?

Your eye surgeon will numb your eyes before the surgery with anesthetic eye drops so you feel no pain. If you’re anxious before the surgery, your eye doctor can give you a mild sedative to put you at ease. After surgery, you will be prescribed drops to soothe your eyes during your recovery.

How soon can I resume normal activities after LASIK surgery?

Most people are able to resume daily activities the next day with improved vision. However, it’s recommended you avoid certain activities like contact sports and swimming for the first few weeks after your procedure. Over the next few months, your vision will continue to improve, making your treatment a worthwhile investment.

Should I have both eyes treated at the same time?

For your convenience, you can have both eyes treated at once to improve your vision.
