Do you feel like your dry eye symptoms seem to just get worse during the winter months? They do not just seem to get worse, they actually do. The cold windy months can make dry eye symptoms much more difficult to deal with. If you have been suffering from dry eye or any other eye changes that have caused discomfort, contact H. Arnold Papernick OD in Mt. Pleasant to schedule a consultation.

Tips For Dry Eye During the Winter Months

Add a humidifier to your home and office. Skin and eyes are often dried out because of fireplaces and heaters. A humidifier can go a long way towards making your skin and eyes less dry and itchy.

Consider your medications. Some cold and flu medications have ingredients that can help dry up your congestion, but the side effects may include dry and itchy eyes. If your dry eye symptoms come on after starting a new cold medication, there may be a connection.

Do not allow hot hair to blow into your eyes. When you are in your vehicle you may be tempted to turn the heat up to max and feel that warm air on your face. This hot drying air can be instantly and progressively irritating to the eyes.

If you spend time outdoors do not forget your eyewear. Many people associate eyeglasses and sunglasses with the summer sun, but the winter sun is just as dangerous. Also, consider the reflective snow and the winter winds that can dry out your eyes. Be sure to wear glasses or even ski goggles if you are going to be outside for a prolonged period.
