Reading Myths Debunked

The new school year is in full swing, and that means more reading, writing and arithmetic for everyone. Reading serves as the basis of nearly all types of learning. In order to have a successful school year, Dr. H Arnold Papernick and our entire staff would like to debunk some of the most common myths surrounding reading.

  • Low or Dim Light Will Weaken Your Vision

You may have been told many times as a child to turn on the lights while reading otherwise you would damage your eyes. In spite of your parents' dire warnings, beyond the possibility of temporary eye strain, there are no permanent effects to reading in dim light or even in the dark.

  • Glasses Make Your Eyes Seem Worse

It may seem as if your vision has become worse while you are not wearing corrective lenses. However, this is due to the fact that, when you are wearing your corrective lenses, you are becoming used to seeing more clearly. This contrast is not due to the fact that your eyes are dependent on your glasses.

  • Bright Sunlight and Reading Do Not Mix

In reality, any activity completed in bright sunlight has the potential to damage your eyesight. This is why you should always wear sunglasses that block UV rays as well as a wide-brimmed hat while you are outdoors.

  • Tiny Print Can Damage Your Eyes

While trying to read print that is tiny can cause eye strain, there has not been any evidence that states that doing so can lead to permanent damage. If you find that you are having difficulty reading print, try using a digital reader that allows you to change the size of the text or choose large print books.
