The Most Effective Ways to Keep Your Eyes Healthy

You depend on your eyes to see, so it’s important to take excellent care of them. As you age, your eyes can become more vulnerable to certain diseases and conditions that can  impair your vision. Use the following tips to protect your eyes and keep them in good health.

Do Not Skip Checkups

woman receiving eye examYour eyes need routine exams to detect any problems you might have and to see how strong your vision is. Our optometrist can give you a thorough exam to check your vision, eye function and more. These exams can also reveal early signs of glaucoma or other eye-related conditions that can affect your ability to see.

Eat Plenty of Antioxidants

Antioxidants, such as vitamin C and vitamin E, are nutrients that can lower your risk of cataracts, age-related macular degeneration and other eye diseases. Eat foods with high levels of vitamins C and E for good eye health, such as oranges and other citrus fruits, broccoli, almonds and sunflower seeds.

Shield Your Eyes

The sun’s UVA and UVB rays can increase your risk of developing cataracts and other eye conditions that can lead to vision impairment. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block these rays, and remember to wear them all year round, not just in summer.

Prevent Eye Strain

Looking at computer screens for long periods of time can strain your eyes, make them dry and give you blurred vision. Glance away from screens about every 15 minutes to give your eyes a rest, and keep corrective lens prescriptions updated to lower the risk of eye strain. Reduce glare from screens as well in order to protect your eyes.
