LASIK Eye Surgery Myths (Debunked!)

We want to make sure that you understand the myths and misunderstandings associated with LASIK eye surgery. We offer pre- and post-operation services and will schedule follow-up appointments for you in our Mt. Pleasant office.  Let's  start with debunking the myths and uncovering the truth.

Debunking LASIK Myths With Our Mt. Pleasant Optometrist

  1. The Procedure is Painful

It is a myth that the procedure is painful. During the laser treatment, a medical professional uses numbing eye drops that prevent pain. After the procedure, or during post-operative services, we provide follow-up care at H. Arnold Papernick OD so that you have convenient long-term services. Our follow-up starts shortly after the procedure and assists with any discomfort that develops.

  1. Blindness is a Risk

LASIK is a surgical procedure and it does have potential risks; however, it is a procedure that takes place on the surface of the eyes. As a result, the procedure does not have a risk of blindness.

  1. You Will Have Perfect Vision

Depending on the state of your vision before the procedure, it is possible that you will not have perfect vision after the procedure. We only recommend individuals to appropriate professionals during pre-operative services, so a medical professional will explain the possible benefits of the procedure based on your health.

  1. LASIK is the Only Treatment Option

Although LASIK is a powerful tool to help improve your vision, it is not always the best choice for your needs. We do not recommend the procedure if you have underlying health conditions such as scars or eye trauma that can limit the success of the procedure or if an alternative option is appropriate for your goals.

  1. It Lasts for a Lifetime

When you go through the procedure at a young age, it is possible that your eyes will still change from the aging process. In some cases, you will need reading glasses or similar treatments as you age and your eyes change. After one full year, a full exam is recommended, in which we offer, to determine the long-term results of your procedure.

LASIK is a useful tool to help correct or improve your vision, but you must understand the risks and benefits before you decide to complete the surgery. For more information about the treatment, give us a call today.
