Tips From Our Eye Doctor About Sunglasses

Darker lenses don't offer more protection - If you opt for the darker sunglasses under the theory that darker tint equals more protection, you are sadly wrong. The part of sunglasses that offers UV ray protection is clear, not dark colored. Whether you choose clear, yellow, rose, tan, brown, or black sunglasses, you will be protected from UV damage. Choose sunglasses based on their style, fit, UV protection, and your budget, not the color of the tint.

Yes, you do need sunglasses all year round - Some people believe that you only need sunglasses in the summer. After all, that is when the sun is the brightest. Let us tell you, this is not true. You actually need sunglasses year round. In the winter, sun reflecting off snow, lakes, or frozen rivers, can create a very intense glare that could damage your eyes.

UV absorption is all you need when selecting sunglasses - While it is true that you do need a pair of sunglasses that offers UV protection, those two magic words are not enough to fully prevent UV-related eye damage. We recommend that you choose sunglasses that say UV 400, which means that they block the full range of UVA and UVB rays, or sunglasses that say they offer 99-100 percent UV absorption. We often recommend polarized sunglasses. Because these glasses have a glare-reducing function they can offer superior performance and crisper vision than plain sunglasses. Polarized lenses on their own do not protect your eyes from the sun, so you must ensure any polarized lens you select offers sun protection.

Sunglasses protect your eyes and skin from damage - Sunglasses are recommended for adults and children of all ages because they offer superior protection from the sun's UV rays. Over time, UV rays can cause skin damage, premature aging, and vision problems including cataracts. Individuals with blue eyes may be more susceptible to sun damage, so if you have blue eyes you should pay special attention. Certain medications -- including tetracycline and birth control pills -- can increase your sun sensitivity and make matters worse.
