Our Mt. Pleasant Optometrist Provides Specialty and Hard to Fit Contacts

Contact lenses that are specially made to fit in H. Arnold Papernick OD

Contact lenses are a comfortable, convenient alternative to glasses for most people. Millions of people, however, find it difficult to wear contact lenses. Many of these individuals have a condition that changes the shape of the eye; others experience a problem that makes wearing contact lenses uncomfortable. If you have trouble wearing contacts, you may have ‘hard to fit’ eyes. Fortunately, our Mt. Pleasant optometrist may be able to create specialty contacts that fit comfortably.

Specialty contacts, also known as hard to fit contacts, are for patients with eye conditions that make it difficult to wear contact lenses. Some conditions change the shape of your eyes, scar eye tissue or dry out your eyes in ways that cause discomfort or a poor fit. These conditions include:

  • Astigmatism
  • Keratoconus
  • Dry eyes
  • Giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC)
  • Post-refractive surgery (such as LASIK)

Our Eye Doctor Provides Specialty Contact Lenses for Hard to Fit Eyes

Astigmatism causes blurred vision in a specific part of your field of vision. Prescription lenses as provided by our eye doctor help you overcome astigmatism by correcting your focus in those specific parts. Regular contact lenses rotate on your eyes, which would cause the corrective part of the lens to move out of place. Toric lenses, on the other hand, do not rotate.

Keratoconus is a condition where the normally round cornea, which is the transparent layer covering the front of your eye, begins to thin and take on an irregular cone shape. Most contact lenses fit the round shape of the cornea, whereas specialty contacts fit the irregularly shaped cornea in keratoconus.

Hard-to-wear contacts are effective choices for patients with GPC, which is a complication of wearing conventional contacts, and for those how have had LASIK surgery. Specialty lenses are also good for patients with dry eyes.
